Earth Day Tips for Reducing Waste

Next week, Scramble suscriber Heather Gradowski plans to write a guest column on reusing packaging and reducing waste in honor of Earth Day (April 22nd). Do you have tips to suggest, ways to recycle stuff you already have around your house, suggestions for reusing containers to pack lunches, store food, pack snacks, etc.?

Or, do you have suggestions for using food containers in other creative ways - like using plastic baby food containers to store jewelry when travelling, using wipes containers to hold household items, etc.? Heather and I are eager to share your tips! Please post them by commenting on the Scramblog.

My husband uses small jars and plastic containers in the workshop for storing small hardware items. We use plastic newspaper bags for the dog, but we seem to have an oversupply of those bags, so if others have ideas for them please let me know.

I have tried to change my purchasing patterns so that I am buying items with less packaging. For example, to reduce the number of individual serving yogurt containers we generate, I starting purchasing a non-fat yogurt "drink," sold by the quart in returnable glass bottles, from the dairy that delivers our milk (also in returnable bottles). I can portion out the yogurt drink into the smallest size mason jars for portability (one could also reuse plastic yogurt containers, but I was afraid that would leak).

My mother is excellent at repurposing things, if I come up with more examples I will post.
